From high-schoolers modifying a Ford Focus hybrid to run on biofuel to would-be manufacturers of three-wheeled electric vehicles, the X PRIZE's seven automotive expert judges have winnowed a field of 135 vehicles down to 53, powered by six different fuel sources and coming from 18 states and 10 countries. And five of them were on display today in lower Manhattan.

Ford plans vehicles to interact with power grids (AP)

AP - Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday its future electric cars will "talk" to power grids across the country, part of an effort to drive interest in alternative energy vehicles.

Americans taking the government up on its offer of cash for clunkers appear to be thinking about dumping their gas guzzlers. Autobytel, an automotive shopping and research Web site, reports guzzlers are seeing the most "clunker evaluation activity." Ford, Dodge, Jeep and Chevrolet trucks and sport utility vehicles accounted for the top 10 vehicles being considered for trade-ins, according to the site. The most popular car being purchased under the program, according to the White House? The Ford Focus, which boasts up to 35 mpg.
